The British and Irish Lions rugby team dates back to the late 1800s. The team is made up of a selection of the best players from the 4 home nations (Ireland, England, Scotland & Wales). The team tour once every four years to one of the 3 major Southern Hemisphere teams of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

Since the start of the professional era of rugby, the British Lions purpose has been called into question with many saying that it is only done now for the advertising revenue it can generate. These calls were particularly loud after the shambolic Lions tour of New Zealand in 2005 where they were whitewashed 3-0 and Sir Clive Woowdward seemed to have forgotten the spirit of a Lions tour which is essentially to have fun and play with flair.

However, the British Lions of 2009 went some way to restoring the pride of the British Lions with a 2-1 series defeat to the World and Tri-Nations champions South Africa. After losing the first two tests in somewhat unfortunate circumstances due to mysterious refereeing decisions, the British Lions completely outplayed the Springboks in the third test. Sir Ian McGeechan’s 2009 British Lions have ensured the legacy will live on. On a personal note, McGeechan has surely to go down as one of the greatest Lions to ever live having played on two tours and coached on 5. He epitimises the spirit of the British Lions and rugbyin general. He will be missed.
